first american edition, the rare first separate book publication. Lytton`s ghost story was first published in Blackwood`s Magazine in 1859 and then appeared in book form in volume 10 of Tales from Blackwood in 1860. Conforms to the more common English edition with this copy bearing Gowans's (the English publisher) International Library advert at end. "...a classic, perhaps the best haunted-house story ever written" (Sullivan, Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 63).
